This Yorkshire New Year weekend hiking break was taken at the end of December 2010 with my partner Anne. It was a SPICE West Midlands hiking and social break and there were SPICE members from various parts of the UK. Steve Dell of Fizz Leisure organized the weekend on behalf of SPICE.
Our first day hiking was around Ilkley more over 5 miles. Starting at the Cow & Calf Rocks and passing the historic 12 Apostles Stone Circle. On New Year's Eve our day hiking route was 7 miles over Haworth Moor to Top Withens, where Emily Bronte got her inspiration for Wuthering Heights. On New Year's Day we did a 7 miles day hiking trip around Shipley Glen to Saltaire.
We stayed at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel on the Bingley Road between Bingley to the west and Shipley to the east. The rooms were of a high standard and all meals were included in the package. There were a range of activities throughout the weekend including our own private Gala Dinner and disco on New Year's Eve.

My Shipley Glen Saltaire Circular Day Hiking Yorkshire England UK

Shipley Glen and Saltaire circular day hiking was a 7 mile long trip. My partner Anne and myself undertook this hike whilst on a New Year Weekend Hiking Break in Yorkshire, England, UK during December 2010 with SPICE West Midlands. Steve Dell of Fizz Leisure organized the weekend on behalf of SPICE.
The day hiking trip was actually done on New Year's Day 2011. After leaving our hotel, we had a short walk along the local river and canal before going north through Shipley Glen on the western side and then south on the eastern side of the Glen. Then we went through Saltaire, where we had our lunch before returning to out hotel along the canal and roads.
This was an easy to moderate hike as there was a long gentle incline to cope with. The hike was varied and quite interesting. We hiked along roads, a back alley, along a river and a canal. We also went through woods along a ridge, up hill and down hill but nothing too strenuous. We also hiked over heathland and through a Victorian park.

My Howarth Circular Day Hiking Yorkshire England UK

This was a 7 mile hike via Top Withens. It was an anti-clockwise route I did with Anne, my partner, whilst on a New Year Weekend Hiking Break in Yorkshire, England, UK during December 2010 with SPICE West Midlands. Steve Dell of Fizz Leisure organized the weekend on behalf of SPICE.
First, the day hiking took us from Haworth through Penistone Hill Country Park. Next we went onto Haworth Moor, where Emily Bronte got her inspiration for Wuthering Heights. We visited the Bronte Waterfall before climbing to Top Withens, the supposed setting for Wuthering Heights, complete with its ruins. Next, we retraced our steps downhill and then did an anti-clockwise semi-circular route following a gulley over the moor to a farmhouse. Lastly, we followed a straight track back to Penistone Hill Country Park.
This was an easy to moderate hike as there were a couple of steep gradients to tackle. However, the inclines were more than worth if for the stunning views of the open moor land. At the time we did this hike, which was New Year's Eve, there was the Annual Fell Running Event to Top Withens, so there were lots of Fell Runners going back and forth.

My Circular Day Hiking on Ilkley Moor Yorkshire England UK

Ilkley Moor had fantastic views, both of the moor itself and of the surrounding area. During the hike we saw the famous "Cow and Calf Rocks" and the historic "12 Apostles Stone Circle". The grade of this day hiking was easy to moderate as there were some gradients. The moor was quite high, hence the great views, but we started the hiking from high up anyway.
We started the day hiking from the "Cow and Calf Pub", across the road from the moor and the "Cow and Calf Rocks" where we parked our cars. When we arrived there was a thick mist and we were wondering if we would be able to see anything. We were also thinking we may get lost on the moor. However, just as we began the day hiking, the mist miraculously lifted and provided some really spooky views of mist in the valley.

My Rhossili Down And Worms Head Day Hiking Gower Peninsula Wales UK

Myself and my partner, Anne, did this 8 mile day hiking trip whilst we visited the Gower Peninsula in South Wales on a Hiking Holiday during October 2010. This Hike can be done as just Rhossili Down at 4 miles, just Worms Head at 4 miles or both at 8 miles depending on the tide times. If you want to do both parts, use the tide times for crossing to Worms Head to determine which section to do first. We did Rhossili Down early in the morning to catch the low tide for crossing to Worms Head later in the day.
The highest point above sea level on the Gower Peninsula is Rhossili Down's Beacon. It has imposing all round views of the peninsula. Although there is one steep climb up Rhossili Down, it isn't too long and is over and done with fairly quickly and well worth as the views you get of Rhossili Bay are fabulous. We went up the far end called Hillend.
With regard to Worms Head, it is very tricky underfoot with a long stretch of rocks to tackle to get to the first tract of land, the Inner Head. To get beyond that a second section of rocks and boulders must be contended with.

This was a 7 mile one way day hiking trip during a hiking holiday on the Gower Peninsula in South Wales during October 2010. The hike was quite straightforward. We left Port Eynon, hiking west over National Trust land along the coast until we reached Rhossili. We had some variable weather along the route and some lovely views, including dramatic cliff scenery and the famous Worms Head. We parked our car in Port Eynon Car Park and got public transport back to the car park from Rhossili. We made sure that there was public transport the day before by checking the bus timetable.
