Video - My Bellingham Hiking Holiday Northumberland England UK
My Bellingham Hiking Holiday in Northumberland UK was a fantastic trip for both myself and Anne, my partner with seven days of day hiking planned.
Northumberland is the most northern county in England with the Scottish Borders to the north. To the east is the North Sea and to the west is Cumbria. It also borders south east with Tyne and Wear, and County Durham is on the southern border.
The seven hikes were: Kielder Water at Bull Crag Peninsula; Hadrian's Wall at Walltown; The Tyne River and Hexham; Hadrian's Wall at Once Brewed; The coast and Craster; Hadrian's Wall at Housesteads; and finally Hadrian's Wall at Steel Rigg.

Video – Cornwall Walking Port Isaac Hiking on the South West Coast Path England UK
Cornwall Walking Port Isaac Hiking on the South West Coast was about 6.5 miles in distance and undertaken in May 2011. Myself and my partner Anne did this hike whilst on a Cornwall hiking holiday. We drove from our holiday accommodation in St Teath to the starting location of Port Isaac pay and display car park at the edge of the coastline.
Port Isaac is the archetype of a Cornish fishing village and it is also famous as the setting for "Doc Martin", the television series. The outward leg of this hike was from Port lsaac, westward to the secluded Inlet of Port Quin along the South West Coast Path. The coastline route between Port Isaac and Port Quin was an invigorating and stunningly picturesque rollercoaster ride along chaotic, tumbling cliffs and intricate hills. The return leg to Port Isaac was over peaceful fields, tree lined valleys and stone stiles.

Video – Cornwall Walking Bude Hiking on the South West Coast Path England UK
Cornwall Walking Bude Hiking on the South West Coast was roughly 5 miles in distance and undertaken in May 2011. I did this route with my partner Anne whilst on a Cornwall hiking holiday in St Teath. We drove straight to the hiking location from home, the Crescent pay and display car park which also had the Bude Tourist Information Centre located within it. After the hike we continued our journey to our holiday accommodation in St Teath.
Just after the start there was quite a steep ascent to Compass Point. After that the walking was relatively easy. We followed the coastal path south which is fairly near to the road from Upton onwards, but not too close that well-behaved youngsters or dogs cannot be left to roam around. At Widemouth Sand the path headed inland across pleasant fields to Bude Canal by Helebridge near Marhamchurch. We then returned to Bude alongside the quiet and peaceful canal.

Video – Hadrians Wall Circular Day Hiking At Steel Rigg, Northumberland, England, UK
This 11.5 miles hike had an anti-clockwise route which started in the town centre of Hadrians Wall Circular Day Hiking Steel Rigg was about 7 miles in distance and undertaken in April 2011. Myself and my partner Anne did this hike whilst on a Northumberland hiking holiday. We drove from our cottage accommodation in Bellingham to the starting location of Steel Rigg pay and display car park next to Hadrian's Wall, just north of Once Brewed on the B6318.
Hadrian's Wall was constructed during the era of the Roman occupation of Britain. It extends 73 miles across the north of England from Bowness to Wallsend. As you travel east past the remains of Milecastles and Turrets from Steel Rigg to Housesteads Roman Fort you hike through history. If you wish, while at Housesteads, you can investigate the extensive unearthed ruins of Roman life. There is a museum which interprets what you see and displays some small religious sculptures together with other small finds unearthed from the civil settlement and military barracks. The return hike is along the Military Road which is at a level a short distance away from and below the wall. The road was used as a supply route by builders, traders and the military to transport materials and supplies.

Video – Housesteads Circular Day Hiking At Hadrians Wall In Northumberland, England, UK
This 11.5 miles hike had an anti-clockwise route which started in the town centre of Much Wenlock. First we went in a north easterly direction, mainly along the Housesteads Circular Day Hiking Hadrians Wall was about 9 miles in distance and undertaken in April 2011. Myself and my partner Anne did this hike whilst on a Northumberland hiking holiday. We drove from our cottage accommodation in Bellingham to the starting location of Housesteads National Trust pay and display car park on the B6318.
Probably the most well known part of the northern frontier defence of the Roman Empire here in Britain is Housesteads Roman fort on Hadrian's Wall. These days it is owned by the National Trust and managed jointly with English Heritage. The fort towers over the wild land north of the wall on the cliffs of Housesteads Crags. This hiking route loops over landscape which at times I would describe as wild or untamed. The last leg of the hike returns from the east with fabulous views of the wall and north of the wall. I would advise hikers with little experience to only attempt this hike on a clear day.

Video – Craster Circular Day Hiking In Northumberland, England, UK
Craster Circular Day Hiking Northumberland was about 8 miles long and undertaken in April 2011. Myself and my partner Anne did this hike whilst on a Northumberland hiking holiday. We drove from our inland cottage accommodation in Bellingham to the starting location of the pay and display car park on the edge of Craster on the Northumberland coastline.
This route is fairly straightforward and unchallenging, except for the 8 miles distance. The route follows the low cliffs past several attractive bays prior to heading inland to loop back to the start along lanes and fields. The last section goes through a small nature reserve in the old quarries just to the rear of the village.

Video – Once Brewed Circular Day Hiking At Hadrians Wall In Northumberland, England, UK
Once Brewed Circular Day Hiking Hadrians Wall was a varied and interesting hike over rugged fields, moorland paths, country lanes and beside Hadrians Wall with a number of short steep inclines.
The route was circular in an clockwise direction, first heading west from the Once Brewed National Parks Centre along the B6318 main road before heading south west across pastures. The route then went in a westerly direction via a track, a lane and over rugged fields with hollows and shallow sink holes.
The route then went north down a lane, crossing the B6318 to another lane and onwards across the Vallum to Milecastle 42 on Hadrians Wall at Cawfield Crags next to an old quarry. From here the path led east beside the undulating wall past Thorny Doors, Caw Gap Turret and Caw Gap and beyond the trig point on Winshield Crags to a lane. Here the route went south down a lane back to Once Brewed National Parks Centre.

Video – Hexham Circular Day Hiking In Northumberland, England, UK
Hexham Circular Day Hiking Northumberland was about 8.5 miles in distance and undertaken in April 2011. Myself and my partner Anne did this hike whilst on a Northumberland hiking holiday. We drove from our cottage accommodation in Bellingham to the starting location of Wentworth pay and display car park just south of Hexham Bridge next to the supermarket.
Hike along this charming riverside path from Hexham to the meeting point where the North and South Tyne rivers merge into one river, that of the River Tyne. The lovely route then continues beside the South Tyne to the hamlet of West Boat. Here you leave the river to gently ascend over wide pastures and past woodlands. You return from the village of Fourstones, back beside the pleasant rivers which lead back to Hexham.

Video - Walltown Circular Day Hiking Hadrians Wall Northumberland England UK
This 11.5 miles hike had an anti-clockwise route which started in the town centre of Walltown Circular Day Hiking Hadrians Wall was about 7.25 miles in distance and undertaken in April 2011. Myself and my partner Anne did this hike whilst on a Northumberland hiking holiday. We drove from our cottage accommodation in Bellingham to the starting location of Walltown pay and display car park.
If you are going to hike along Hadrians Wall from west to east then the Walltown section will provide you with an initial understanding of how grand a scale Hadrians Wall is. Extra drama has been added to the scenery by a century of quarrying dolerite from the Great Whin Sill which has created an abrupt high cliff edge.
