Video – Hadrians Wall Circular Day Hiking At Steel Rigg, Northumberland, England, UK

This 11.5 miles hike had an anti-clockwise route which started in the town centre of Hadrians Wall Circular Day Hiking Steel Rigg was about 7 miles in distance and undertaken in April 2011. Myself and my partner Anne did this hike whilst on a Northumberland hiking holiday. We drove from our cottage accommodation in Bellingham to the starting location of Steel Rigg pay and display car park next to Hadrian's Wall, just north of Once Brewed on the B6318.

Hadrian's Wall was constructed during the era of the Roman occupation of Britain. It extends 73 miles across the north of England from Bowness to Wallsend. As you travel east past the remains of Milecastles and Turrets from Steel Rigg to Housesteads Roman Fort you hike through history. If you wish, while at Housesteads, you can investigate the extensive unearthed ruins of Roman life. There is a museum which interprets what you see and displays some small religious sculptures together with other small finds unearthed from the civil settlement and military barracks. The return hike is along the Military Road which is at a level a short distance away from and below the wall. The road was used as a supply route by builders, traders and the military to transport materials and supplies.
